Can Your Garden Be A Bird Haven With Bird Feeder Poles-Yes It Can
Many bird enthusiasts the world over delight in bird watching. Bird feeder poles give people a way to attract birds to their yards and gardens that don't have trees for birds to perch in. By employing bird feeder poles you can experience the luxury of bird watching and listening to songbirds. There are several commercially available poles however here we are doing this with our own designs and skills, and saving some money in the process.
A bird feeder pole is a pole you set up in your yard from which you can hang a bird feeder. The pole can be a rod, pipe, or wooden post and in this article we'll be using a pipe. The birds don't care how they look as long as it's tough, that is, does not wobble and there is food they prefer in the feeder.
A Simple Technique
Your list of materials:
If you go to your local big-box building supply store you will discover 4" or better yet 6" plastic pipe in the plumbing section. They come in 10' lengths for a little over $2 and with an appropriate size end cap you've hustled the pole section for around $3. You'll want 10' so you can sink the pipe 2' into the ground for steadiness. Leaving 8' above ground the feeder will hang elevated enough so that predators, like neighborhood cats, won't be ready to disturb the birds.
Next over to the cleaning section for a broom handle.
The tool department will have a drill bit the same diameter as the handle if you do not already have one, and then to
building materials for silicone caulk or
the paint department for epoxy glue.
Initial thing to perform is to make an elongated taper cut on one side of the pipe. Measure up from the bottom of the pipe 8-10" and mark a line from there to the other side of the pipe and cut the pipe on this diagonal line. You'll now have a fairly sharp point to the pipe. This will make it easy to pound the pipe into the ground. Next step is to drill the hole for the broom handle. You could employ a dowel, they come in 3' or 4' pieces but cost more. You might choose to cut the threads off the end of the broom handle, however, now we 're getting into artistic areas. Drill the hole for the broom handle (or dowel) 1 1/2" from the top of the pipe completely through the pipe. Insert the broom handle in the hole and center it. With either the caulk or epoxy glue the handle to the pipe.
Deploying Your Bird Feeder Pole
At this point you might want to paint the whole assembly for a more uniform appearance which means you'll require a can of spray paint when you are shopping. Now you just need to pound the pipe into the ground. Measure 2' from the bottom of the pipe and make a mark. This is the depth you really should pound the pipe into the ground so keep hitting it until the mark is at ground level.
As soon as the paint is dry (if you painted) all that's left to finish is hang your favorite bird feeder from one side of the pole and hang a water trough from the other side to balance the load on the pipe and provide the birds water to drink.
To obtain a sizable flock and variety of birds to come to your garden you need to install multiple feeders. For optimum outcomes putting one kind of feed in each feeder is going to insure that most of the feed does not wind up on the ground and each bird feeder pole attracts particular species of birds. Furthermore make sure your feeders are 12' -15' from the building and in a location having limited foot traffic.
